Grahana (eclipse) occurs when the Sun, Moon, and Earth align. Solar eclipse (Surya Grahana) happens at New Moon when the Moon blocks the Sun. Lunar eclipse (Chandra Grahana) happens at Full Moon when Earth's shadow falls on the Moon. Rahu and Ketu are considered to 'swallow' the luminaries during eclipses.
